Les toutes premières CX n'avaient aucune protection en caoutchouc, respectant la pureté du dessin originel. Les versions les plus cossues furent ensuite équipées de bourrelets relativement épais, sur le pourtour entier du pare-choc, et sous le pare-choc avant, munis alors de deux grosses crosses assez proéminentes. Si peut-être moins esthétique, la chose avait le mérite d'être bien plus protectrice, notamment lors de manœuvres et démarrages en ville...
